What Causes Snoring in Women

Neha Joshi
Snoring is basically an outcome of improper flow of air within the air passages of the throat. There are many reasons why this air flow gets obstructed. A woman can snore due to a range of reasons. Knowing some of these causes can help you get rid of this problem.
Almost all the causes for snoring can be worked upon and the problem can eventually be cured. However, to cure the problem, you first need to know what causes it.

6 Reasons that Might Lead to Snoring

Overeating

Eating just before sleeping causes undigested food to exert pressure on diaphragm causing it to convert to fat. When fat grows around neck, it exerts pressure on throat, and later, on the air passages in throat, interrupting the air flow, which leads to snoring.
Thus, it is advised to have your meal at least three hours before you sleep. Overeating and not exercising also culminates into the same problem.

Alcohol

Alcohol is a contributor to snoring in more ways than one. It not only helps in the easy collapsing of throat flaps, but also adds to a person's weight.
Alcohol doesn't take time to absorb itself in our bloodstream and slow down our responses. Alcohol is also, to some extent, responsible for nasal congestion and irritation. If alcohol is properly metabolized, its effects reduce considerably.

Smoking

Smoking is another cause that leads to snoring in women. It also causes nasal irritation and congestion.
The smoke might even cause catarrh and swelling. All this leads to congestion, which in turn leads to disturbed airflow. It is also said that the more you smoke, the more likely you are to snore. Even passive smoking leads to snoring.

Sleeping Position

An incorrect sleeping posture is another cause. Therefore, for women who snore, it is advised that they don't sleep on their back; this is because the tongue and the soft palate falls back into the throat. This hampers proper passage of air. So, it's best to change your sleeping position and sleep sideways. This will help you to stop snoring naturally.

Allergies

Certain allergies can also lead to snoring. Yes, there are allergies that cause nasal congestion and eventually lead to snoring. Some problems arising out of these allergies are rhinorrhoea, post nasal drip, nasal congestion, sneezing, and itching.
Basically, nasal hypersensitivity leads to respiratory allergies. This causes swelling of the throat and nose, which hampers proper breathing. The condition of the nasal airway that is affected due to this allergy is said to worsen at night.

Improper Breathing

Poor posture, muscle pressure in the throat, neck, and chest, and allergies, can cause improper breathing; here, it means breathing through the mouth. This happens because of obstruction of the nasal passages, which causes unstable flow of air in the throat.
Soft tissues are most affected when you breathe through your mouth. This also leads to snoring as the air flow through the mouth causes the tissues to vibrate.
There are nasal strips and medications available, that help to cure snoring problem. However, resort to them only after you have consulted your doctor. So get rid of your snoring problem as soon as possible, and have a good night's sleep.
