Try These 6 Natural Ways to Beat Stress

Paisley Hansen
Stress is a natural part of life. Without it, our ancestors wouldn't have escaped danger or developed specialized tools for defense. However, in our hyper-aware society, it can seem like stressors are everywhere. Try one of these six natural strategies to combat stress the next time you feel it taking hold.

1. Stay Well Rested

Sleep can play an important part in keeping stress at bay. Make sure you get at least seven hours of sleep. If you are having trouble falling or staying asleep, it may be a time for a new mattress. Consider trying a memory foam or natural latex mattress for extra support. Some have specialized gels that can keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night.

2. Try Mindfulness

Mindfulness simply means being aware of yourself and your surroundings. It can help you find balance and may act as a natural counter to stressors that appear in your life. Yoga and meditation are both mindfulness strategies that you can use virtually anywhere to help manage stressful situations. Breathing meditation is a great introduction for this.

3. Get Enough Exercise

Exercise may not seem like a natural defense against stress, but it can be an excellent stress-fighting tool. Your body produces lots of hormones when you exercise, which help generate feelings of happiness. The classic runner's high is an excellent example. In addition, exercise can help boost your energy levels.

4. Have a Good Laugh

Sometimes laughter really is the best medicine. It causes your body to reduce stress hormones and helps relieve tension. You may notice that it is easier to relax your muscles when you are laughing because of that lower tension. Not only is it fun to have a good laugh, but it can also be incredibly good for your health.

5. Stop and Smell the Roses

Not all flowers are roses, so make sure you smell the ones that are known to reduce feelings of tension and stress. Although some have been shown more effective than others, you'll want to pick ones that are uplifting to you. A few good natural scents to start with are lavender, rose, chamomile, and orange.

6. Play with Your Pet

Playing with pets is a great way to combat stress and anxiety. The incredible rise of emotional support is a good testament to this. Doctors commonly use companion animals as an effective method of combating PTSD and the anxiety that it can cause in everyday situations, and studies have shown they help our bodies regulate the impact of stressors.
