Exercises to Stop Snoring

Bhakti Satalkar
The person who snores, generally, is not aware of how annoying it can be for people around him/her. Performing some exercises could help to some extent.
Snoring is caused because of narrowing of the airway. Also, it can be caused due to sleeping in a wrong posture, or the presence of excess fat tissues, and/or soft tissues in the throat that press against the airway. There are many remedies available to stop this problem.

However, in most cases these remedies are useless. These include the use of breathing strips, anti-snoring devices, etc. Some people may even be prescribed surgery and some drugs. However, one must first try natural ways instead of resorting to a surgery or drug therapy.

Common Causes of Snoring

  • Not many would agree, but it is genetic.
  • If you have reached middle age, you can relax and blame it on the age.
  • If you are overweight, you may want to consider shedding some flab to control it.
  • Alcohol and smoking
  • Allergies, sinus infection, asthma
  • Poor sleeping posture

Exercises

Loosen the Jaw

Close your mouth and move your jaw, as you would while chewing a gum. Continue to do this action for a minute every time. When doing this, your molars on both the sides move apart a little and touch each other lightly, before they move apart again. See to it that your lips are pressed onto each other.

Humming

Press your lips onto one another and make a "mmmmm" sound for a few seconds initially. You can gradually increase the time. This helps in opening and clearing the throat. When you make this sound, the weakest tissue in the throat contracts.

Tongue Stretch

Stretch your tongue out as much as you can. After having stretched it, move it towards the right and then slowly towards the left.
Then, try to touch the tongue to your nose and then the chin. It is very difficult to touch the nose or the chin. You may have to repeat this about 12 to 15 times.

Pucker Up

All you need to do here is to pucker up, so that you can blow a kiss. Hold in this position for about 10 seconds. Do this about 10 times.

Smile Wide

Make an exaggerated smile, and hold it for 10 seconds. Repeat this 5 times.

Accupressure

Acupressure is a good way to stop snoring. Press three fingers on the chin and apply pressure for a few minutes. Do this a couple of times.

Pile on the Pillows

There are also some other home remedies like using two or three pillows to sleep on and sleeping on the side. These are known to have only a temporary effect.
