Organic Mattress Bedding: Toppers, Pads and Beds

Abhay Burande
Organic mattresses are available in various materials such as wool and cotton. These have certain advantages over non-organic ones with regards to health concerns. Organic material is also used to manufacture pads/toppers.
Organic mattresses are made of organic, non-toxic materials. The bedding is either made of natural, untreated wool, natural latex, or organic cotton. Wool mattresses are naturally resistant to fire and dust mites. The organic cotton is used for making the batting and the wrapping material.
However, it is not fire resistant, and is therefore wrapped in wool layers. Natural latex is derived from rubber trees, and is much better than polyurethane (PU) foam that emits harmful VOCs.
Organic mattresses are classified as soft, medium, medium-firm, or firm. While buying such mattresses, the cost and the aesthetics have to be considered. The varieties available are :
▣ Organic crib firm: 8 inches, firm
▣ Basic organic mattress: 8 inches, soft/medium/medium-firm/firm
▣ Classic organic mattress: 10 inches, soft/medium/medium-firm/firm
▣ Deluxe organic mattress: 11 inches, soft/medium/medium-firm/firm

Advantages

Natural Latex Mattress
Apart from comfort, safety is an important consideration when choosing a mattress. Most commercial mattresses use synthetic materials like plastics, foams, and polyesters. These can emit toxic gases that can be inhaled and absorbed during the night.
Commercially processed cotton also contains pesticides. In moist conditions, microscopic feces of dust mites on the absorbent commercial mattresses can cause bed-generated allergies. Such unhealthy sleeping conditions may prove risky to the health.

Caring for Organic Mattress Bedding

A mattress pad must be used below the sheets to protect it from spills. Any stains on the mattress must be cleaned with mild soap and water. The organic casings must not be washed as they may shrink or get damaged.
When the mattress becomes wet, the inner and outer covers must be removed from the foam. This foam must then be exposed to air and not sunlight. Then, it should be allowed to dry for some days.

Organic Mattress Toppers/Pads

Toppers are used to add comfort and support during sleep. There are latex, wool, and cotton innerspring mattress toppers made for appropriate sleeping comfort. These toppers do not contain any synthetic material. It greatly reduces unpleasant pressure points. It is naturally resistant to moisture build-up, bacteria, allergy, mold, and dust.
The quilted natural latex mattress topper is made of natural latex and not any synthetic materials. This is topped with organic cotton and pure grow wool, which is quilted to organic cotton ticking.
Pure wool mattress topper is made of chemical-free pure wool and is encased in certified organic cotton cover. It has a natural organic cotton cover and is hand tufted for quality and comfort. The pure wool regulates body temperature and the quilting prevents the filling from shifting. A zippered organic cotton washable cover provides additional protection.
