Pulse rate or heart rate is defined as the rate at which the heart beats per unit of time. It is usually measured in per minute of time. Pulse rate is considered as one of the factors that helps in diagnosing diseases, particularly heart diseases. Heart rate varies from person to person as it is dependent on various factors like the gender, age, weight, etc.

Pulse Rate

The heart rate or the pulse is commonly checked with free hand at the wrist of the patient. Apart from the wrist, it can be checked at a number of other parts of the human body like the neck, the inside of the elbow, behind the knee, on the abdomen, and on the chest. There are also several advanced machines that help in measuring heart rate accurately.
As mentioned before, knowing the normal pulse rate will help in knowing whether you are healthy or are at a risk of suffering from certain disorder. On the other hand, if you are an athlete, it is essential for you to keep a track on your pulse rate during training.

Normal Resting Pulse Rate

For adult men, the healthy heart rate can be anything in between 60-100 beats per minute. As mentioned before, it is not constant for all men and greatly varies according to age, weight as well as activity level in people. The pulse rate of a younger man will be higher than that of an older male.
Secondly, the regular heart rate for athletes is much lower than average males. In men, any number between 70-75 beats per minute are considered as normal. This may vary with some points or so according to the age of the person. On the other hand, pulse rate at rest for athletes is between 50-55 beats per minute.

Higher Pulse Rate

The heart rate is found to elevate when a person performs physical exercise or undertakes physical activity. High pulse rate at rest can be a sign of stress and obesity. If the normal resting heart rate is found to increase as much as 100 beats per minute, the person suffers from a condition known as tachycardia. It may also be a sign of heart diseases.

Maintaining Normal Pulse Rate

In order to maintain a normal heart rate, one should have a proper diet and exclude saturated foods and fats from the diet. The diet should also be low in cholesterol and salts. On the other hand, daily exercise, usually cardio, helps in maintaining proper heart health and keeping pulse rate at normal levels.
Lastly, remember that the heart rate depends on several factors and tends to vary a lot. It is advisable to undertake regular checkup to prevent diseases related to the heart. Take care!
