Infrared sauna heaters have become popular in the United States and have been sold in US since 1981. However, the technology has been used since 1900s. In Japan, the first infrared heaters were patented during late 1960s, and were used exclusively by medical practitioners. In Germany, physicians used it as a whole body therapy. Later on, these heaters were released to the public for personal use. Today, these heaters are gaining popularity around the word, due to its therapeutic benefits.
Infrared sauna heaters basically use infrared radiant heat or electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength which is longer than visible light. An infrared sauna is different from the traditional steam sauna because, it heats up the body of the user indirectly. While in regular sauna the air heats up due to steam and then the body gets heated. An infrared sauna penetrates the body's tissue and causes deep heating.

There are different kinds of infrared sauna heaters. Carbon type use far infrared waves, which means the heat produced is of higher wavelength than regular infrared sauna. Far infrared heat enters the body deeper causing intense sweating, which provides more health benefits.
Also, carbon types offer a lifetime warranty which include the cabinetry, while other types of sauna heaters provide one year warranty on the cabinetry. This is important, as wood exposed to high heat from sauna can crack or warp.
You can also buy an infrared sauna heater which is a traditional version. This type of sauna heats up the rocks and produces steam in the room, giving a traditional sauna-like feeling.

Benefits

Heat relieves pain by expanding the blood vessels and increasing blood circulation, which allows more oxygen to reach the injured areas or stiff areas of the body. This helps to reduce pain and speeds up the healing process. Due to sweating, there is also increase in heart rate and metabolic rate.
This process needs a lot of energy and reduces excess moisture, subcutaneous fat, and salt in the body. This leads to detox and weight control.
