Blood pressure is referred to as the silent killer. We have heard this adage several times, but do we know with lucidity what is blood pressure. The heart pumps blood through veins and arteries of the body. The force with which the flow of blood hits the walls of the arteries, is called blood pressure.
A healthy range is found in people, when their pressure is checked, and a systematic reading is recorded. It is generally when we pay a visit to the medical practitioners clinic, that we learn if our pressure is normal, or not.
High (Hypertension), and low blood pressure (Hypotension) are both conditions that occur when your blood pressure exceeds, or limits itself below the normal range.

How Is Blood Pressure Measured

Blood pressure is measured by an expert who employs a device called sphygmomanometer. The sphygmomanometer measures the arterial blood pressure. This is an accurate measure as the level plummets when the blood travels through the body. A healthy blood pressure range for young adults must be 120/80 mm of Hg.
The mm Hg (millimeters of mercury), refers to the unit in which the blood pressure range is expressed. Middle-aged adults might have a range that is slightly higher than 120/80 mm Hg.
If however, the it exceeds 120/80, reaching up to 140/90 mm Hg, one needs to take notice and comprehend that there is some health trouble that one is going through, the indicant being high blood pressure. In a nutshell, the moderately high to extremely high blood pressure range is 140/90 mm Hg to 180/110 mm Hg or higher, respectively.
If however, this is the case, it is an indication for you to take precautionary steps to avert any further complications. Pressure below 120/80 is considered low on the blood pressure scale. The individual is prescribed medication treatment coupled with dietary measures in order to cease the adverse effects and symptoms of high, or low blood pressure.

What Do the Blood Pressure Values Signify

As the healthy range is explained and mentioned, it is now mandatory to find out what these values; 120/80 mm Hg signify. When the values are pronounced on paper, the value that is mentioned first, being the numerator, is called the systolic blood pressure, and the value that features below the numerator value is called the diastolic blood pressure.
When the blood is pushed to all parts of the body, with the heart contracting; it is referred to as the systolic pressure. The diastolic pressure, known to be the lowest point is when the heart relaxes and fills up with blood again, before it gets ready to pump out the blood and continue the cycle.
The blood pressure values are such that they fluctuate as the individual undertakes activities. It may vary when the individual is ascending or descending the stairs, taking a brisk walk, or working out rigorously.
Blood pressure, its escalation or plummeting approach, is based on factors like stress, tension, physical activity, diet - in a nutshell the lifestyle one is leading. Thus, the physical activity that the individual undertakes marks the changes in the levels.
However, it is important that the individual resorts for check-ups periodically, to avoid any health complications and cause further trouble. A consistent monitoring is an effective and accurate manner to learn, if our blood pressure is within the normal range.
Pressure that deviates from the normal range can spell disaster in the wake of healthy living. Thus, for further convenience you could resort to looking at the chart for a detailed understanding of the counter effects one suffers from, when one is diagnosed with high or low pressure.
