Having an upset stomach can take over your day. That queasy feeling is hard to ignore. Nausea can occur when chemicals in the belly and brain become unbalanced, causing stomach muscles to spasm. Because these spasms can cause vomiting, or at least stress about vomiting, coping with occasional nausea can take a lot of energy.
Whether your upset stomach is caused by motion sickness, head tension or something else, this discussion of natural remedies will give you some ideas. These remedies can also be used in combination for a more comprehensive approach. From old-time favorites to aromatherapy, you will have plenty of options to try.

1. Saltine Crackers

This time-tested remedy has been known to temporarily quell nausea. Eating just a few crackers may help absorb stomach acids or other gastric compounds that could be causing your upset stomach. It’s possible that the salt may balance the digestive system.
When you are nauseous, you don’t feel like eating, and a few crackers may be all you can get down. That alone may balance blood sugar in a way that stabilizes nausea.

2. Ginger

Ginger, in any form, has been a long-time remedy for stomach issues. Keeping a bottle of ginger capsules is a good practice. If you don’t have ginger in supplement form, you can use ginger candy chews or make a tea from fresh ginger.
It’s been reported that ginger can be as effective at easing indigestion and nausea. Ginger helps release certain neurochemicals that are needed for intestinal balance.

3. Wrist Acupressure

You may have seen these nausea-relief wristbands in drugstores. They are stretchy bands with a small plastic bump embedded. When positioned correctly, the bumps put pressure on the acupressure point that relieves occasional nausea. The bump should be positioned on the inside of the wrist a couple of centimeters below the hand joint.
You can feel a groove between two tendons. That’s the spot. If you don’t have the wrist bands and need a remedy quickly, you can do self-acupressure. Use your thumb to apply pressure to the opposite wrist point for about 10 seconds, then alternate between wrists until your nausea lessens.

4. Essential Oils

Essential oils can be powerful agents for helping numerous health conditions. Along with internal use, inhaling the aroma from certain essential oils is known to calm and soothe the senses. Peppermint, spearmint and copaiba essential oil top the list of effective remedies when ingested.
If you have an oil diffuser, you know what to do. When you need to soothe emotions during feelings of nausea, you can also put a few drops of oil on a cotton ball or tissue and hold it under your nose, taking increasingly deeper and slower breaths. Some people like to mix a few drops of oil with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil.
You can make a thin salve and apply it to your upper lip and nose area throughout the day. This is a simple way to make it continuously available when you breathe in. The salve can also be massaged into the stomach and solar plexus area.
This is the area between the belly button and the lowest ribs. It is believed that deeper breathing may be part of the benefit, so breathing mindfully is also recommended.

5. Herbal Tea

Several types of herbal tea are known to contain digestive properties that can relieve nausea. The tea form of three remedies mentioned is believed to quell stomach upset. Ginger, peppermint or chamomile tea, sipped throughout the day, can be helpful.
If you are up for a trip to the grocery store, you will find that most herbal tea companies have blends specifically created to aid digestion and relieve nausea.
It’s no fun to lose a day to an upset stomach. Nausea can be approached using physical, neurochemical or energy-balancing remedies. These ideas can help you can feel better and get on with your day.
