However much we take care and maintain hygiene at home, there are times when we have to deal with pests. Surely, you would agree with the aforementioned statement. It becomes all the more difficult to find an effective pest control method which would do the needful, and isn't too harsh.
It is understandable that whenever it comes to an infestation, what we fear the most are insect bites. In case of the carpet beetles, people have plenty of doubts: Do they bite?, What to do in the occurrence of an infestation?, What to do to keep them at bay?, etc. The following text shall give effective answers to each of these questions.

Physical Appearance

Carpet beetles are about one-fourth inch in length with certain physical characteristics that differ in both the sexes. Males have longer antenna than the females. Adults have darker shades of red, brown, and black, along with a unique design on their back. The larvae are a bit longer lengthwise (approx. 12 mm), hairy, and can be easily distinguished.

Beetle Bite

People fear these beetles, thinking that they bite. You may rest assured that they are not harmful to humans as far as biting is concerned. However, if your skin is highly sensitive, that obviously calls for concern, as carpet beetles may probably cause temporary allergies.

Nuisance

They feed on all sorts of organic, processed products and materials available in your house. You would mainly find them on wool, fur, animal hair, carpet fabric, clothes, leather, plant remains, and vegetable wastes, as well as in closets, basements, drawers, attics, and storage boxes. A cluster of white eggs laying anywhere in and around these materials is a sure sign of an infestation by carpet beetles. In this case, dealing with the situation and getting rid of these pests is the only solution left to you.

How To Treat An Infestation

  • Use a vacuum cleaner. Wherever you spot the beetles, just suck them up through the pump, and later discard them.
  • If not, you could make use of boric powder or diatomaceous earth, and just spread it in the affected areas.
  • Alternatively, you could place naphthalene balls wherever needed.
  • To get rid of the eggs, wash the material in warm soap water for a while. Brush off the infested part thoroughly.
  • In case any of the methods don't work for you, you could make use of chemical pesticides as the last option.
Apart from the aforementioned remedies, try to keep your house as clean as possible. Dump off vegetable and food waste, and fill up wall cracks so as to avoid pests from entering your house.
